Teaching ABC Order

Today, I'm linking up with Ashley from The Resource Room Teacher for her Special Needs Sunday Linky Party.

Back before I moved, I wanted to teach my kids ABC order as part of our morning message.  This was just a really tough skill for my kiddos, but they were more successful with a visual and a highlighter.

So nothing groundbreaking but a simple visual and a system for marking off words and letters made the skill more concrete for my kiddos.  First, we read each word and then highlighted the first letter of the word on the alphabet line.  We were then able to see which word would come first and put them in order.  Do you have any tips for teaching ABC order?

  1. YAY! That is the kind of example I like to see. Thank you for sharing with this special education teacher who LOVES new ideas! I am going to try this for my group warm up tomorrow.

    1. Oh, I hope it helps your kids out!! Please let me know if it works! I don't even try to give students an ABC order activity without an alphabet line for them use as a reference. Good luck!

  3. Hi there,
ABC order is so challenging. I have been trying to think of another way introduce to my early readers. This is a great idea. Found you at Special Needs Sunday.

  4. I learned this from my school's special ed. teachers too! I just also highlight the first letters of the words so the kiddos see where I'm getting the letters. Since I only teach first graders and don't have to worry about going to the second letter, it works well. It helps my strugglers really get the concept and even my high level kiddos use it to double check themselves!
